Alan Powell has been working in electronic media since the early 1970's. He mentored under Brice Howard at the National Center for Experiments in Television at KQED, in San Francisco. From 1974 -1978, Alan Powell was part of the Electron Movers, a Video Art Collective in Providence, RI. From 1975 - 1978 he was composer-in-residence at the MaColl Studio for Electronic Music at Brown University. From 1981 - 1993, Alan Powell and his partner, Connie Coleman were artists-in-residence at the Experimental TV Center in Owego, New York. Their numerous shows, broadcasts and exhibitions include the Kitchen, New York Avant Garde Festival, Long Beach Museum, Musee de Arte Moderne, Paris, Swiss television, New American Radio, PBS, the Learning Channel, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Their work includes single channel video tapes, installations, electronic graphics, sound installations, and paintings. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Film/Media Arts Department at Temple University.

    Alan Powell's current work includes paintings, web design, and video installations. The current work in progress includes "The Diary Project" , an interactive site of 365 paintings triggered by the server's clock and the "Halifax Crazy Quilt" an interactive web site based on the game of jeopardy. Both sites are diaries based on the artist's struggles with death, cultural politics and with individuals who suffer from mental health disabilities and codependency. "The Diary Project" is funded by a creative research grant from Temple University.
