The Taxidermy Project is an extension of my projects focusing on how humans interact with nature. Since pre-history, humans have recorded their “kills” by using the animals skins as clothing and has simulations of the spirit that once existed within the skin. A dear friend of mine has been feeding his family from his hunting skills since he was 10 years old. He is now in his eighties. His son develop one of the premier taxidermy shops in the United States. Originally all of the extra skins were tanned for fine leather and the meat processed into jerky for the troops and meat for the homeless shelters. Most of the hunters I meet in the shop are very non-verbal. They have a spiritual connection to the animal whose life they just took. The taxidermy process allows them to relive that experience and reminds them of the spirit they took away.
